Opposition UDF candidate Chandy Oommen is leading in the initial rounds of counting in the Puthuppally assembly bypoll here on Friday. Son of late Congress stalwart Oommen Chandy, he has been far ahead of his nearest co-contestants, PTI reported.
The bypoll results are seen as a test for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA ahead of the five state assembly elections scheduled later this year and the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

The ruling TMC was leading in the by-election to the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Friday in a close contest with the BJP, officials said.
After seven rounds of counting, TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy was leading by 2,931 votes. BJP candidate Tapasi Roy was at the second spot, while CPI(M) candidate Ishwar Chandra Roy, backed by the Congress, was at a distant third spot, they said. (PTI)

BJP candidate Parwati Dass was leading by 2,041 votes over the Congress' Basant Kumar as counting of votes polled in the Bageshwar assembly bypoll progressed on Thursday.
At the end of the 10th round of counting, the BJP candidate had polled 25,094 votes while the Congress candidate got 23,053 votes, Bageshwar District Magistrate Anuradha Pal said. There will be 14 rounds of counting, she said.

AJSU Party candidate Yashoda Devi was leading by 1,551 votes over her nearest JMM rival Bebi Devi in the by-election to the Dumri Assembly seat in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Friday, officials said.
After seven rounds of counting, the AJSU party candidate, an NDA nominee, secured 25,557 votes, while the JMM candidate, who is the INDIA bloc nominee, got 24,006 votes, they said.
All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen candidate Abdul Mobin Rizvi was in the third place with 1,129 votes. (PTI)

The BJP on Friday morning was leading in both assembly seats in Tripura's Sepahijala district where bypolls were held, according to the Election Commission.
After four rounds of counting, BJP's Tafajjal Hossain was leading by 25,478 votes in the Boxanagar seat. CPI(M) candidate Mizan Hossain was at the second spot.

Bypolls 2023: 87 pc voter turnout recorded in Tripura, 6 injured in stray violence
Nearly 87 per cent voter turnout was recorded till the end of polling in the by-elections to Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly seats in Tripura's Sepahijala district on Tuesday, an official said.
Polling was largely peaceful barring an incident near Mohanbhog sub-zonal office under Dhanpur constituency where six youths were injured, officials said.
Villagers set fire to five motorcycles, triggering tension, but the situation was brought under control, a police officer said, adding, the injured have been admitted to hospital and are out of danger. (PTI)

Counting of votes began at 8 am on Friday for the by-election to the Dhupguri assembly seat in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district amid tight security, officials said.
The polling for the by-election was held on September 5. A voter turnout of 78 per cent was recorded, they said.
The counting was being held at the Jalpaiguri II campus of the North Bengal University.
"The counting of votes began at 8 am. There is a three-tier security around the venue of the counting," an election official said.
The bypoll was necessitated by the death of BJP MLA Bishnu Pada Ray on July 25.
The ruling TMC has fielded college professor Nirmal Chandra Roy, while the BJP has nominated Tapasi Roy, the widow of a CRPF jawan killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021. The CPI(M) has fielded folk singer Ishwar Chandra Roy, and the Congress supported him.
